DEAR STUDENT – WELCOME TO EUROSPEAK

You are now or hope to be a student at Eurospeak Language School. This page  tells you everything you need to know about being a student and tries to answer the most common questions we are asked.

Make sure you know the rules for your student visa!

1.      Full-time students: Students who have a student visa must enrol in full-time (15 hours per week) day classes. Your attendance must be more than 85% or it is very unlikely that the Home Office will renew your visa when your first visa finishes. We will warn you if your attendance is not good enough for visa requirements but we will not be able to help you if you do not attend school regularly or do not come to school for more than two weeks. You must pay for 5 classes per week even if you do not attend all 5 classes.

2.      Part-time students: Students who have any other kind of visa e.g. au pair, tourist, working, or EU and Accession country students who do not need a visa. You may enrol for day or evening classes. You do not have to attend a certain number of classes. For you, we offer a ‘pay-as-you-go’ plan so you only pay for the classes you attend.

3.      Visa Requirements for Full-time students

·        You must attend 85% of classes to meet your visa requirements. Students whose attendance falls below 85% will receive a warning letter from the school administrator.

·        You must attend the whole class to receive the attendance for that day. If you arrive late and leave early, you will not be given attendance.

·        If you are absent from school for any reason, you must get written evidence of why you were absent. For example, if you are ill, you will need a letter from the doctor to explain why you were not in school. This is not for the school but for you to send to the Home Office when you want to extend your visa.

·        You are allowed to work part-time (up to 20 hours per week) during the school term and full-time during the school holidays.

·        The Home Office may contact the school at any time and ask for an update on any student’s attendance. The Immigration authorities may also do this if you leave the country at any time and are trying to regain entry to the U.K.

·        Eurospeak is responsible for reporting non-attending students to the Home Office. If you are sick or on holiday, you must contact us and tell us why you are not in school. If you do not attend school for 3 weeks or more, we are obligated to report you to the Home Office.

4.      Visa extension applications

* If you applying to change the type of visa you have e.g. tourist visa to student visa, you may not be able to do this in the U.K. depending on which country you come from.

* You should send your application form to the Home Office one month before your visa finishes.

(1)   Students wanting visa extensions must first get a visa application form.  Form: FLR (S)

You can get this by telephoning the Home Office: 0870 241 0645 and asking for a form to be posted to you, or by downloading a form from the website: www.ind.homeoffice.gov.uk or ask in the office.

(2) Complete your form.

(3) Allow Eurospeak 48 hours to complete the attendance section of the form. We must check our records to calculate your attendance.

YOU MUST HAVE ATTENDANCE OF MORE THAN 85%

(4) When you send your application form to the Home Office, you must show evidence of how much money you have each month and where that money comes from. It cannot be from any work that you do in the U.K. You must show the Home Office that you have enough money to live without working.

The documents can be bank statements or letters from your family, employers in your home country, to say that you will be sent enough money to pay for accommodation, food, travel costs and school fees.

(5) You can go to the Home Office in Croydon, London to take your visa application in person or send your application by post.

6.      School requirements and regulation

Attendance

·        Students must inform the school if you are going to be absent for 2 weeks or more (illness or holiday). If you do not inform the school, your place in the class may be given to another student.

·        When you decide to finish your course, please inform the school 2 weeks before your last class. If you do not inform the school, we may charge you for the 2 week notice period.

Books

·        All full time students are expected to buy the course book and the workbook. If you pay termly for your classes, you do not pay extra for the course book, which is included in the course fees for the term. If you pay monthly or weekly for your classes, the cost of the course book will automatically be added to your course fees at the beginning of the term.

·        Eurospeak also offers for sale supplementary books, such as grammar and vocabulary books. Prices are displayed on the notices in the classrooms. If you would like to buy other self-study books that we do not use in school, please ask your teacher of Academic Director to recommend suitable material.

·        You may borrow supplementary books from the school. We will ask you to pay a deposit of £15, which will be returned to you when you return the book to the school. You will be charged for books that are not returned.

Parking

·        Eurospeak students are not allowed to park at the Greyfriars Centre. If you park here you may be fined £25 for unauthorised parking.

Appointments with the school director

·        If you have a lot of questions or need a long time for us to help you, please try to make an appointment with the school director. If you ask us in the break time or at the beginning or end of a class, we may not have time to help you fully.

School documents

You will need school letters for the following:

·        To open a bank account

·        To go on holiday if you are leaving the U.K.

·        To apply for a National Insurance number

·        To join a local library

·        To confirm that you are a student when you are applying for a job

At the end of your course, Eurospeak can also provide students with a Certificate of Level Attained. If you would like this certificate when you leave the school, please ask in the school office.

Please allow Eurospeak at least 24 hours to produce any school documents. We cannot always produce student letters, bank letters etc. instantly.

Bank accounts

It may not be easy for you to open a bank account as many banks are not keen to give bank accounts to foreign students. You need to decide which bank you would like to have an account with and get a letter from the school, addressed to that bank. Do not be surprised if the bank refuses your application. If this happens – try another bank.

Payment

·        Discounts are only offered when payment is made in advance of classes.

When a course deposit of £378.00 is paid, the student will only receive the termly discount of 10% if the remaining balance of payment for the term is paid on arrival. For the monthly discount of 10%, students must pay in full in the first week of the month. Students paying for a term in advance receive 12% discount and students paying for a year I advance receive 15% discount.

·        On arrival, students must inform the school if they will be paying termly, monthly or weekly.

·        Full–time students must pay for 5 classes per week even if you do not attend all 5 classes.

·        If payment is overdue, students will receive a note reminding them to make a payment. If a payment is delayed for more than 2 weeks they may not be allowed to attend the class.

·        In the winter term, all classes up to Christmas must be paid before 10th December. In the summer term, all classes up to the end of May must be paid by 31st May.

·        Normally in September and January, or at the beginning of your course, there will be a charge of up to £18.00 for a text book and £10 for a workbook.

7.      Taking examinations

To renew a full time student visa, the Home Office need to see evidence of progress. This means you need to take at least 1 external exam each year eg. Cambridge PET, Cambridge FCE, IELTS, TOEIC. Ask us for advice on when to take exams and which exams to take. There are many different examinations available, depending on what you want to use your qualifications for: entrance to universities and colleges, business and employment in the UK and in your home country.

8.      Exam procedures

The school is a national exam centre no.: 51302 and is approved by Cambridge ESOL and OCR for conducting exams set by these bodies.  It also helps students to take exams in other exam centres for exams it does not conduct itself such as IELTS and TOEIC. Computer assessments are normally held on the school premises.

It is important for all full-time visa students to understand that our courses are all aimed at helping you to take an exam in English or Computer Studies. Normally the Home Office require proof of exam results before they grant a visa extension.

Cambridge English exam dates are published on our website (www.eurospeak.org.uk) and in our leaflets. IELTS and TOEIC exams can be taken most weeks of the year but in other centres. Computer assessments for CLAIT are organised in the school 6 or 7 times per academic year. The teacher will help you  decide when you are ready to take your exam but YOU must enrol for an exam in the school office and pay the entry fee.

9.      Cambridge examinations

Eurospeak is a Cambridge Exam Centre no.: 51302, which means you can take these exams in the school in December, March and June.

10.  ISIC cards

Eurospeak can issue International Student Cards, which will give you discounts on a range of items, such as travel and shopping. If you want to get a student railcard, you will need an ISIC card to apply at the train station. However, an ISIC card does not automatically get you discount as it is for individual companies to decide if they want to participate in the International Student Card scheme and to accept the card for discount. For example, all ‘Warner’ cinemas accept the ISIC card, but other cinemas do not.

·        ISIC cards can only be given to FULL TIME STUDENTS, studying for a minimum of 6 months.

·        To get an ISIC card, please ask in the office for an application form. You will need to complete the form and then bring it to the school with a passport size photograph and £9.00. Your card will be ready in 24 to 48 hours.

11.  School Rules

·          Class attendance – full-time students are expected to attend their lessons every day during the period of their enrolment. Any student who is unable to comply with this must produce a written document explaining their absence or obtain school authorisation for their absence. Students who are in England as a result of obtaining a student visa will be reported to the Home Office if they fail to respect their agreement made with the school and is clearly expressed in their letter of acceptance.

·          Class behaviour – All students are expected to behave in a manner consistent with their participation in a well-ordered group class. They should be cooperative and respectful to the teachers and members of the class. A notice explaining classroom etiquette is posted in all classrooms. They are also expected to make a reasonable effort to follow the class and do the work set in class for their homework.

·          Students whose behavior in the classroom is disruptive will be warned 1 or 2 times and then told to leave the class. If this behavior continues their conduct will be referred to the school director who may suspend or expel them.

·          Students who repeatedly fail to do the work set will be warned and will be referred to the academic director and subsequently to the school director who will take appropriate action.

·          Students who are rude, offensive or racist in the context of the classroom will be referred directly to the school director who will decide on the appropriate action to be taken.

·          Cambridge exams candidates are given the official Cambridge sheet setting out proper conduct and invigilators ensure that these standards are maintained.

·          Plagiarism. All work that emanates from another source must be referenced.

·          Collusion. All work presented must be the result of one student’s work unless otherwise authorized by the teacher.

·          Personating. All students who present themselves at examinations must show their passport or national ID.

12.  Health and Safety

·          You must never behave in a manner that might be considered dangerous. You must follow the instructions of the teacher and the fire notices in all the classrooms in the event of a fire or a fire drill.

·          There is a first aid box in the main school office. The school can not give you drugs or medicines. You will need to provide your own aspirin or equivalent. We can call an ambulance.

·          If you notice a student in physical distress and judge that the student needs help please report this to the nearest teacher and help the student if appropriate. It may not be a good idea to move a distressed or injured student.

13.  Complaints Procedure

·          If you are not satisfied that you are being treated correctly please speak to the member of staff concerned with your complaint.

·          If you are still dissatisfied with the way in which your complaint is dealt with, please give the member of staff concerned a written letter of complaint with a copy for the school director.

·          If you are still dissatisfied with the situation, make an appointment with the school director who will take appropriate measures to resolve the issue.

We want you to enjoy being a student in England at Eurospeak and will try to help with any problems you have. Please talk to your Tutor Teacher about any problems or questions you have, or make an appointment to see Michael or Tony. Adapting to a new culture and way of life is not easy, but if you try your best and work towards your goals, your efforts will be rewarded.
